With Bridgestone’s decision to leave Formula 1, they are still in need of a tyre supplier for the 2011 season. The two main contenders are Michelin and Pirelli.

Both have previously been in F1, 2006 was Michelin’s last year and Pirelli in 1990.

In Monte Carlo on Sunday May 16th, The Formula One Teams Association met in hopes to make a final decision, but no agreement was made.

There are no indicators as to which supplier has an upperhand. Michelin has the most recent F1 experience, but Pirelli has poised a very good proposal.

KERS - Kinetic Energy Recovery System

Williams Toyota is still considering running KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) in the 2010 Formula 1 season. This would conflict with the FOTA’s ban KERS in 2010 but Williams is not apart of FOTA as they chose to break ranks and sign up for the 2010 Formula 1 season during the FOTA vs. FIA battle.

The FOTA KERS ban is considered a gentleman’s agreement among the FOTA members but Williams has continued to develop their flywheel KERS system throughout the year as the technical regulations will permit teams to use the controversial hybrid system in 2010.

One FOTA member that may want to consider reviewing the KERS ban is McLaren, who have built a reliable system and used it in many races this season.

FOTA, comprised of eight Formula 1 teams, banded together in response to the FIA’s proposal to place a budget cap of $65 million per team. After much bitter debate, FOTA announced that they would break free of Formula 1 and the FIA to form their own racing championship. After being served this ultimatum, Formula 1 Supreme Leader Bernie Ecclestone was forced to negotiate in order to save his empire.

On Wednesday it was announced that current FIA President Max Mosley has agreed not to run for re-election. This may have been mandated by either Ecclestone or FOTA as the tone of recent statements from Mosley suggested negotiation was not an option.
