F1 Technician to Trek Across Sahara

Mark Owen, a 53-year-old Formula 1 technician, plans to gear up for a trip across the Sahara desert. Nope, he won’t be enjoying the rolling hills on a camels back—he’ll be cruising across this hostile terrain in a 1924 Delage tourer.

This 6,000-mile adventure across Africa won’t be made alone, his wife Sue plans to accompany him as they travel from Longworth to Ghana. This trip is a fund-raising adventure, in which Mark hopes to earn £4,000 for the Sabre Charitable Trust—it helps provide Ghana children with schooling.

Mr. Owen estimates that the journey will take him 6 weeks and cost £1,000 in fuel. His ride travels at a maximum speed of 70mph and is sure to face heat waves up to 40 degrees Celsius.
