kubicaName: Robert Kubica
Hometown: Kraków, Poland

2008 Stats:

Team: BMW Sauber
Car: BMW Sauber F1.08
Wins: 1
Podiums: 7
Pole Positions: 1
Fastest Laps: 0
Championship Points: 75
Championship Position: 4th

Leading the Formula 1 Championship after seven races was Polish driver Robert Kubica. He eventually finished the season in fourth place, but his emergence as a Formula 1 contender was firmly established. Kubica had a very solid year with few mistakes. One notable mistake was his spin out in the rain at Silverstone which caused him to lose third place. Considering the amount of mistakes by other title contending drivers made in 2008 (Hamilton) Kubica had a very clean season.

Kubica’s his drop in the standings was due to his car’s inability to compete with F1 heavy-weights McLaren and Ferrari, and not his driving ability. As BMW’s pace declined relative to McLaren and Ferrari, Kubica made his frustration clear and began to criticize the team publicly. Kubica believed that the team’s focus was heavily devoted to his teammate Nick Heidfeld’s qualifying troubles, which hurt the Pole’s title chase. This allegation is most likely overstated, but BMW Sauber should give Kubica all the attention he deserves if they have any type of Championship aspirations in 2009.

sugarcane12The Indy Racing League has signed a deal that will have Indy Cars running on Brazilian ethanol for the 2009 season. The IRL has been racing exclusively on the ethanol since the 2007 season. Under the deal, the Brazilian suppliers will be responsible for producing the approximate 120,000 gallons of ethanol used each IRL season.

Brazil is the second-largest producer of ethanol behind the United States. However, Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of ethanol and is able to produce the biofuel with sugar cane, which is cheaper to make than the corn-based ethanol.

loeb1Since the world’s most successful rally driver ever (Spaniard Sebastien Loeb) has been testing in a Formula 1 car recently, I thought it would be appropriate to show an amazing rally video, with Ken Block. The car control seen here is jaw-dropping. There is even a stunt that includes a Segway if this insane driving with a tricked-out Subaru WRX isn’t enough to perk your interest. Enjoy.

Preparations for 2009 Formula One Season in Progress

lewis-hamiltonEven though the Formula 1 season has just ended, preparations for the next season have already begun. Most teams are currently participating in this week’s testing in Barcelona. Many of the teams are said to be using hybrid cars which are just one of the new rules for the 2009 season.

In an attempt to increase the amount of passing in F1, this years cars will feature wider front wings and narrower rear wings. The purpose of this is to reduce the aerodynamic turbulence coming from the rear of the lead car, which unbalances the front end of the chase car. The 2009 cars will also feature cleaner body sides as most of the aerodynamic appendages between the wings have been banned. BMW Sauber has already shown their new aerodynamics package on the track.

Many teams are reported to be testing the new KER (Kinetic Energy Recovery) systems or just simulate the additional weight the systems will end up adding. KERS utilizes a flywheel technology to recover and store a vehicle’s kinetic energy while the vehicles decelerates. Some of the captured energy will be used deliver extra power during the lap.

Another important change for the 2009 season includes a return to slick tires.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and alleged tax cheat Helio Castroneves is trying to postpone his March trial so he can continue to race. Castroneves wishes to move the trial to November. His employer, Penske Racing, is also asking for his trial to be pushed to the end of the racing season. Penske may need to select another driver for the 2009 IndyCar Series if Castroneves goes to trial in March. If Helio isn’t racing he will have tons of time to spend on the dance floor perfecting his craft.

Helio won the 2007 Dancing with the Stars competition with his gorgeous dance partner Julianne Hough.

Posted in IndyCar with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on November 13, 2008 by autoracingpower

surfersparadiseThe IndyCar Series will not be returning to race in Surfers Paradise in 2009. It was announced yesterday that the Indy Racing League and the Queensland government were not able to reach an agreement regarding long-term scheduling or financial terms. The Indy Racing League wished to move the race from October to March due to a clash with American football. Moving the race to March would conflict with the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. Motor sports will still be present in Surfers Paradise in October of 2009 with Australian V8 Supercars.

In October of 2008, the IndyCar Series debuted in Surfers Paradise holding a non-points race. The race was won by Ryan Briscoe (first Australian driver to win in 18 years) of Team Penske in front of 97,000 spectators.
